In 1821 Decatur County, along with Shelby, Rush and Henry Counties, was carved out of the southern part of Delaware County, and Greensburg was chosen in 1822 as the county seat. The first settlers chose land along the rivers in the northern tier of townships. The standard history of the county is Lewis Harding, History of Decatur County Indiana (1915). The city of Decatur, Indiana is not in Decatur County, but in Adams County
