PHOTO BOOK, beginning of 20th century, Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana.
Hazel Prue Ayres Woodward (lived 1892 July 20 to 1968 Oct. 29), the mother of Wayne William Woodward (1930 May 4- ), organized a large number of pictures of her family and her husband’s family. This is an account of one of her mother-in-law’s photo book, now in the possession of Wayne Woodward.
Hazel Picture Book VIII is the title Hazel Ayres Woodward gave this photo album which she had taken over from her mother-in-law, Candas Woodward (Sarah Candas Coy Woodward, 1857 September 11—1926 June 2). I think all but one of the pictures were put here by Candas. There are few dates, the earliest is 1898, the latest 1902, all with “about” before them. I feel sure that the newer, bluer inked captions were put there by Hazel to fill in information. The more faded ink ones may have been by Candas. Except for the Chautauqua and Niagara River pictures I feel sure they were all made in or near Greensburg, Decatur County, Indiana.

DESCRIPTION OF BOOK.
11 3/4 x 7 1/4 x 3/4". The cover is stamped with "PHOTGRAPHS" in gold on a black cloth cover. In chalk on cover is written [by Hazel] “Candas Woodward later A.C. & Hazel Woodward VIII.” Pages are heavy card stock (10 per cm), light gray, bound with an expandable sting tie binding, which has been discarded. Inside the back cover is a sticker with instructions for adding more pages, etc. for this Gilson Adjustable Album from The Carter's Ink Co. This album is in better condition than others and the pictures are solidly pasted on the card stock pages so this album was not torn up. Wayne Woodward torn up other deteriorating albums after photoing the whole pages.
The pictures are of a brown cast. There is one blue picture on 17. Some of the pictures are fading, but are still clear enough to be good. In scanning I came close to the edge, but all information is readable.
Pages 14 & 15 have had all the pictures removed. Page 18 has a note that a picture of the Citizen National Bank, Greensburg, Indiana was on the page [C.W. Woodward was cashier of that bank for many years.] There is another note that page 19 had a picture of Leona Woodward in the Citizen Bank. Both of those pictures are in another part of the Woodward photo collection. A third note says that on page 24 there was a note in pencil “63 pictures” [there are now only 50 pictures]. I have numbered the inside of the back cover as page 25 and not made any images of the blank pages. I suspect that all the pictures that were once on the missing pages were removed by Hazel and are elsewhere in Woodward photo collection and I will make them available as I have time.
8-01 [the “8” stands for the album number in Hazel’s scheme, the page number (without the “0” was written on the pages probably by Hazel).

According to inked captions like the others in the book: 8-18 originally had a picture of Citizens National Bank and 8-19 had a picture of Leona Woodward in the Citizens Bank. 8-24 had a note in pencil that there were 63 pictures. When this record was written there were 50 pictures.
The following photos are not included in the Photo Book, but are of Candas Coy Woodward. Dates of the photos are not known.
